The Greatest “Myth”-Stake: Why So Many People Think They Can’t Afford Life Insurance

“I can’t afford life insurance.”

It’s one of the most common reasons people give for putting off coverage. And I get it. Between rent or a mortgage, groceries, car payments, utilities, childcare, debt, and everything else life throws at us, adding one more bill can feel impossible.

But here’s the greatest “myth”-stake:

Assuming life insurance is unaffordable before ever finding out what it could actually cost.

Why Does Life Insurance Feel So Expensive?

For many people, life insurance sounds like something that requires hundreds of dollars every month. They may remember an expensive quote from years ago, hear what someone else pays, or assume that because they’re older or have health issues, coverage is automatically out of reach.

But life insurance isn’t one-size-fits-all.

The cost can depend on several factors, including your age, health, coverage amount, type of policy, and the insurance company.

That means someone else’s price tells you very little about what your options may be.

Sometimes We’re Asking the Wrong Question

Instead of asking:

“Can I afford life insurance?”

Try asking:

“What amount of coverage can comfortably fit into my budget?”

Maybe the ideal policy you imagined isn’t affordable right now. That doesn’t necessarily mean you have to walk away with nothing.

There may be options that provide a smaller amount of coverage while still giving your family some financial protection.

Because when something happens, even a modest policy may help with expenses such as:

  • Funeral and burial costs

  • Rent or mortgage payments

  • Household bills

  • Outstanding debts

  • Time away from work for loved ones

  • Other immediate financial needs

The goal is not to financially strain yourself trying to prepare for tomorrow. The goal is to find coverage that makes sense for your life and your budget today.

The Cost of Waiting Can Matter Too

There’s another side to affordability that people sometimes overlook.

Life insurance pricing is generally affected by age and health. Waiting several years could mean that the coverage you consider later costs more—or your available options could change if your health changes.

That doesn’t mean you should buy a policy you cannot afford.

It means it may be worth finding out what your options are before deciding you don’t have any.

Start With Your Budget, Not a Sales Pitch

When I speak with someone about life insurance, I don't believe the conversation should begin with:

“How much can I sell you?”

It should begin with:

“What are you trying to protect, and what can you realistically afford?”

If $30 a month is comfortable, say $30.

If your budget is $50, say $50.

And if the numbers simply don't work right now, that's important to know too.

A policy that causes you to struggle with your everyday expenses isn't the right solution.

Don't Let the Myth Make the Decision for You

You may discover that the coverage you want costs more than you're comfortable spending.

But you may also discover that you have options you didn't know existed.

The greatest “myth”-stake is deciding life insurance is too expensive without ever checking.

Don't count yourself out based on assumptions.

Find out what coverage is available. Look at the numbers. Ask questions. Then make the decision that works for you and the people you love.

Because protecting your family doesn't have to start with the perfect policy.

Sometimes it simply starts with a conversation.

Life insurance availability, rates, and eligibility vary based on the applicant, policy, carrier, and underwriting requirements.
